VOLTUS V (1977)

Chōdenji Machine Voltes V (超電磁マシーン ボルテスＶ Chōdenji Mashīn Borutesu Faibu?, Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes Five) is aJapanese anime television series that was first aired on TV Asahi starting June 4, 1977. It was created by Saburo Yatsude (a pseudonym referring to a committee within Toei Company) and directed by Tadao Nagahama. Voltes V is the second part of the Robot Romance Trilogy of the Super Robotgenre which includes Chōdenji Robo Combattler V and Tōshō Daimos. Like Combattler V, the series was animated by Sunrise and produced by Toei Company. The series was animated by Sunrise on Toei's behalf. This super robot along with the other two aforementioned super robots first appeared the USA as a part of Mattel's Shogun Warriors line of import toys, released in the late 1970s.

Description
Voltes V narrates the heroic exploits of the young robot pilots known as The Voltes Team and their trials against alien invaders from the planet Boazan. Armed with the Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V, the five pilots drive back the invaders one Beast Fighter at a time. The series is different from typical super robot anime of the time in that it illustrates human sentimentality and common values, with underlying themes such as the love of family, equality, selfless sacrifice, team work, and patriotism.

Voltes V is a work that has a heavy revolutionary undertone. The series ends with Voltes V's spectacular counterattack on planet Boazan to liberate the slaves from the oppression of a tyrannical ruler, Emperor Zu Zambojil. After Voltes V, Tadao Nagahama directed the TV anime version of Rose of Versailles, which leaves speculation that perhaps Voltes V was influenced by Nagahama's research on the French Revolution for his future project.[original research?] The theme of enslaved population rising up to overthrow an aristocracy lend support to theory.

Voltes V's arsenal consists of variety of missiles, a bazooka, beams, and weapons such as Chōdenji Top (Similar to the Chōdenji Yo-Yo of Combattler V) and Tenkūken (天空剣 Sky Sword, "Laser Sword" in the English dub, "Excalibur" in the Italian dub). With Tenkūken, Voltes V marks the enemy's final moments with a signature "V" slash. This established it as one of the first super robots to use a sword in its finishing attack.

Voltes V deviates from the robotic design of the Combattler V. Voltes V's plot has a more serious tone than the comedic storyline of Combattler V. Voltes V also follows a formula similar to that of Daimos.

Plot
An armada of horned humanoid aliens known as Boazanians invade earth and launch their "beast fighters" all over the world, defeating most of the world's armed forces including the US military. Their first humiliating defeat by Super Electromagnetic Machine, Voltes V brings the invaders to focus their attacks on Japan. Voltes V was designed by Professor Kentaro Gō (Doctor Ned Armstrong), his wife Professor Mitsuyo Gō (Doctor Mary Ann Armstrong) and their trusted colleague, Professor Hamaguchi (Doctor Richard Smith) and built by large scale construction effort backed by United Nations Earth Defense Force and General Oka (Commander Robinson). Voltes V is a robot composed of five "Volt Machines", and each are themselves formidable weapons. Each machine is piloted by Ken'ichi(Steve), Daijiro(Big Bert), and Hiyoshi(Little John): the three sons of Kentaro and Mitsuyo Gō, along with the only daughter of General Oka; Megumi(Jaime Robinson), and Ippei Mine(Mark Gordon), an orphan cowboy.

Voltes V's home base is Camp Big Falcon, a fortress situated on a bird-shaped island along the coast of Japan. Voltes V's enemies are the Boazanians; namely Prince Heinell, Katharine, Jangal, and Zuhl. The series focuses on the struggle against the Boazanian invaders, and the Gō brothers' search for their long-lost father, Kentarō Gō. As the series progresses, four major characters—Professor Mitsuyo Gō, Zuhl, General Oka and Professor Hamaguchi—die. Zuhl and Hamaguchi are replaced by Belgan and Professor Sakunji (Doctor Hook), respectively. Later in the series, the brothers learn of their unique heritage of being half Boazanian. The characters deal with their identity's impact on their own lives and that on both their close friends and bitter enemies.

Dr. HAMAGUCHI (in English version: Dr. Richard Smith): colleague and one of Dr. GOU Kentarou's best friends. He's one of the creators of Voltes V and he's the man in charge of Big Falcon at the beginning of the story.

Chief Commander OKA (in English version:Commander Robinson): chief of Earth International Defense Force, friend of Dr. GOU Kentarou, also one of the creators of Voltes V. He is OKA 

Megumi's father and also a master of Ninjutsu.

  

 Dr. SAKUNJI (in English version: Dr. Hook): a colleague and also a former student of Dr. HAMAGUCHI. He was in charge of Big Falcon after Dr. HAMAGUCHI’s death.

General DANGE (in English version: General Watson): a Boazanian nobleman who cut his own horns and followed La Gour to Earth. He was the pilot of the red Mechanical Eagle aircraft that helped Voltes V to perform Choudenji Ball and later implanted the ultra magucon device on Voltes' back. He was the one who told the Voltes V team about the history of La Gour.

Emperor ZU Zanbajir: the emperor of Boazan Empire. He's the uncle of Prince Heinell and cousin of La Gour. He got his throne after leaking the news that La Gour’s horns were fake. He sent Heinell to Earth with task to conquer the Earth, but he actually wanted to kill Heinell because Heinell was the descendant of the real Boazan king.

DO Zuuru (in English version: Zuhl): One of the Boazanian Officers who assisted Heinell. He had only one horn on his forehead. He was in charge of making battle strategy and designing robots. One of his magnificent idea was X-raying Voltes V to figure out its energy source. He was executed after doing treason against Heinell.

Duke Zaki: The Emperor's hatchet man. He was sent to Prince Heinell to evaluate the progress of Earth invasion. Later he told Zuuru that his actual mission is to eliminate Heinell. He forced Heinell to pilot the beast robot Gargo himself and hinted the Voltes team of Gargo's weak spot. But Kazarin managed to intercept this conspiracy.

General DO Bergan (in English version:General Ozlack): Boazanian general who was sent to assist Heinell. He wore strong blue armor suit made from Maxingal metal with V-shaped metal horn on his helmet.

General Gururu (in English version: Baron Zander): Boazanian general who was sent to Earth to kidnap La Gour and to remove Heinell from his position as Earth Invasion Commander. He revealed to Voltes a way into Heinell’s undersgound lair.

Rosalia: the Boazanian wife of La Gour (Dr. GOU Kentarou). When La Gour was jailed, she was pregnant. She gave birth to Heinell and died not long after that, leaving little Heinell as an orphan.

General DOIR (in English version: Commander Garth): close friend of La Gour. He and La Gour run the secret rebel headquarters in Alpen mountain where Solar Bird was manufactured. Later after the headquarters was destroyed and La Gour kidnapped, he commanded Solar Bird to dock with Big Falcon and take Voltes V team to planet Boazan.

Episode #01 : Invaders from Outer Space

DOKUGAGA :: this butterfly hybrid beast fighter was the first Boazanian robot that encountered Voltes V. His main weapon was his claws.

Episode #02 : An Advance into Agonizing Fight

BAIZANGA :: this beast fighter was powerful and attacked using brute force. He managed to lock Voltes using chains and harpoon. Mrs. GOU Mitsuyo then committed suicide attack by crashing her airplane onto Baizanga's face.

Episode #03 : A Strategy Told by A Grave Post

BONZARUS :: this beast fighter boasted his superior speed. His attack made it difficult for Voltes team to volt-in. He was indeed designed to prevent Volt-in sequence.

Episode #04 : Devil's Shadow Sword Killing Technique

GARDO :: this samurai beast fighter was programmed with advance sword fighting skill called "The Shadow Sword Killing Technique". Voltes had to counterattack his skill with "Butterfly Return Technique".

Episode #05 : Battleship "Mikasa" Causing A Crisis

In this episode there are 2 beast fighters which later combined into one. The first one is NEEGU, the red sea serpent, which was assigned to attack Hiyoshi who was participating in a model boat race. The second one is DAIGA, the blue-gray bulk robot, which was to attack Big Falcon. Later both of them combined into DAINEEGU. Daineegu had a locking weapon that nailed Voltes to the ground, he could also transform the coiling Neegu into a spiky grinding wheels, ready to crush Voltes.

Episode #06 : Neigh! Beloved Horse "Eiffel"

BADDO HEIR :: this bat-like beast fighter had sharp blade on his wings. He could also use his wings to wrap Voltes to render it immobilized.

Episode #07 : New Team Member : Takko-chan

KARAKARAS :: this bird-like beast fighter's main weapon is fire. His attack included burning Voltes and throwing him to the sea so that the sudden change of temperature would crack Voltes.

Episode #08 : A Conspiracy in the Underground Fortress

GARGO :: this tiger beast fighter's main feature was his ability to suck his enemy's energy through his fangs. In the final round, Prince Heinell himself piloted Gargo under the watchful eyes of Duke Zaki.

Episode #09 : A Dream-Invited, Big Crisis

GONDAM :: this beast fighter had unique weapons: the axe-like crown on his head could be launched like harpoon and the feathers of his wings could be thrown like darts.

Episode #10 : Voltes Combining Impossible

There are 2 beast fighters in this episode. The first one is BOMBOS, this dragonfly robot was super fast but his main function was to take an X-ray photograph of Voltes by cameras planted in his eyes, so that Zuhl could unravel the secret of Voltes' super electromagnetic energy flow. The second beast fighter is NAMAZUNGO, this catfish robot was equipped with super electromagnetic device on his head that could disrupt the volt-in sequence.

Episode #11 : Reviving Voltes V!

There are 2 beast fighters in this episode, STRONG NAMAZUNGO, the upgraded catfish robot from previous episode was still continuing his mission to destroy the unable-to-combine Voltes V. Using the powerful super electromagnetic device on his head he could disrupt the volt-in sequence. He was assisted by GAMENZA, the tortoise robot, whose job was to destroy the city while Voltes V was facing Namazungo.

Episode #12 : Voltes Revived from the Dead

KANIGAN :: this crab beast fighter was still using the previous method of disrupting volt-in sequence using the super electromagnetic device on his head. His other weapon was the sticky bubbles.

Episode #13 : The Trick of Father Aiming at the Earth

There are 2 beast fighters in this episode, GONGURU, the gorilla robot. His attack was mainly his brute force. He had a drill on his forehead as his main weapon. The other beast fighter was KURAGENYARA, the jelly fish robot, whose job was to electrocute Voltes V. Dr. Hamaguchi crashed his airplane onto Kuragenyara while he was trying to escape from Sky Rook.

GARUMAN :: this armadillo beast fighter's main weapon was his long, manuverable tongue.

Episode #15 : The Present from the Emperor

JAGUARD :: this jaguar beast fighter's main feature was his speed and agility. Like a real jaguar, he used his claws and teeth as weapon. But his specialty was with fire, he could breathe fire from his mouth and his main weapon was the face-hugger harpoon that sets his enemy on fire.

ZAIZARUS :: this flying rhinoceros beast fighter's main weapon was speed. He bumped to the volt machines so they couldn't volt-in.

GOKIIRU :: this beast fighter was sent to attack the flying saucers of the Boazanian rebels who were trying to flee from Boazan to Earth.

TOBIURAGO :: this beast fighter could take the shape of flying fish and attack with his sharp nose and create wind with his wings.

ZORU GERU :: this beast fighter was amoeba-based, he can change form and weapons can pierce him without causing him any damage. But in this episode he only changed his form once, from knight-on-horse to horseman. His main attack was impalement.

TAKKO-chan: the lovable red octopus robot was made and owned by GOU Hiyoshi. Takko is considered as the sixth member of the Voltes Team. Takko is capable of flying and doing various analysis, even serving coffee!

Solar Bird: The second half of Big Falcon. Manufactured and buried under the cold snow of Alpine mountains by Dr. GOU Kentarou and his crew of escaped Boazanian slaves, Solar Bird rises from its lair under the command of General Doir (in English version: Commander Garth) to save the earth from Magmait Bomb planted by General Bergan (General Ozlack) and to dock with Big Falcon and unleash the power of the flying fortress "Solar Falcon".

Solar Falcon: the flying fortress resulted from the docking of Big Falcon and Solar Bird. Solar Falcon, capable of doing 5 consecutive warps, brings Voltes V to Planet Boazan.

Taka Mecha ("Mechanical Eagle"): the mysterious red aircraft piloted by General Dange (in English version: General Watson). It helped Voltes V twice by shooting the Maxingal-armored enemy robots with ultra electromagnetic beam to decrease the metal strength. On its third appearance, it installed an energy controlling device into the back of Voltes V to enable the safe firing of Choudenji Ball (Super Electromagnetic Ball).

Boazan
Boazan is the eighth planet of a star cluster which is said to be the seat of the Boazanian Star Empire (Empire of the Horn). In this planet lies the great imperial court that houses all the executive functions of the Empire. Due to the liberal reign of Makron XII, a deceased Baozanian emperor, the planet was able to avoid becoming a mechanized city. During Makron XII's time, Boazan remained a natural world and retained much of its natural life support systems. The planet was divided into feudal zones and sectors. Each member of the nobility had his own administrative function. They also appear in the imperial court from time to time. Boazan has an estimated population of fifteen trillion. The populace is divided into two classes namely the horned and the non-horned.

The characteristic of having horns signifies a higher-class status. Such a horned individual enjoys the rights and privileges enjoyed by the nobility. While the non-horned are treated as slaves and should be subservient. The individuals without horns are not free. They are not allowed to have property or other possessions. They cannot marry unless their masters give them permission. These slaves perform 97.3 percent of all manual labor. Most work comprise of agricultural duties but others also work as servants, messengers, and clerks. Boazan is self sufficient but very few industries related to machineries and technology are developed. Thus, Boazania had to rely on imports. However, Boazanina primarily offers many resorts and other entertainment facilities. Its a vacation spot with a rating of 83%, an ideal tourist planet.

The emergence of Boazan as a stellar invader came during the reign of Hakkor IV. The development of rocket propulsions enabled the Boazanians to reach many other worlds. But plans for the explorations of space were shelved due to impracticality.

The so-called intra-stellar drive was perfected during the later years of Hakkornian rule. Although still slow and crude, the utilization of Generation ships were affected due to the growing Boazanian population. And it would take decades to reach the next stellar systems. Old Boazanians would have to die while others will give birth to new Boazanians during the journey. But upon the invention of the interstellar drive, a drive powered by light converted into electromagnetic propulsion, everything in Boazan changed.

However, there was a setback. The chrono-spatio development was not applicable to arms and weaponry. So, the Boazanians developed more conventional weapons, progressing along the lines of atomics and nucleic weaponry. Eons ahead of Earth in terms of technology, Boazan's military forces were more sophisticated and prevailing.

The Beast Fighters was the apex of the Boazanians' war efforts. These massive machines are cybernaut warriors that could come to life upon the transplantation of Boazanian minds into the robotic computers. The Beast Fighters made Boazan a great threat to any civilization in the galaxy. A destructive military force in Boazan supported the imperial explorations.

The Galactic Center was finally brought under Boazan's imperial rule. Boazan reached the periphery of the Galactic Center where Earth was the first of the outer worlds assaulted. The Imperial war officials assumed that the planet Earth would be easy to subjugate. Their efforts, however, were met with opposition, in the form of Earth's Voltes V.

Toys
During the series' run, Popy released a diecast metal toy of Voltes V. The toy was available either with the five Volt Machines sold separately or in a gift set known as the "Volt In Box". Aside from the Volt Machines combining to form Voltes V, the toy also transformed into Voltank mode (an alternate vehicle mode wherein the robot lied down face-first with the Volt Panzer and Volt Lander's wheels on the ground). Voltank mode never appeared in the series, but was a unique feature of the toy. The boxed set was re-released in 1982 before being repackaged as part ofBandai's Godaikin line for the international market in 1983.

Popy also released a Jumbo Machinder version of Voltes V. Standing at over 24 inches in height, the toy featured firing projectile fists and could transform into Voltank mode, which small children could ride on.

In 2006, Bandai released a newer, smaller Voltes V toy as part of their Soul of Chogokin line. This toy is more detailed and more poseable than its Popy diecast predecessor. In 2008, the toy was re-released as a special edition called "Respect for Volt In Box", which pays homage to the original toy in both color scheme and packaging. In addition, this version has been retooled to transform into 

Voltank mode.
International versions
Philippines
Since May 5 1978, Voltes V was first aired on GMA-7 as the first anime to date, it is shown every Friday (6:00 pm) and lasted for a year until 1979. The anime was dubbed in English with a Filipino voice. The anime however was moved to MBS-4 in 1986.

In 1979, shortly before the series was going to end in the Philippines, then president Ferdinand Marcos issued a directive banning of Voltes V "because of excessive violence" and it included the encouragement of people to rebel due to its subversive message. The president also stated that cartoons such as this may affect children's education.[citation needed] Voltes V and all other robot-based anime were taken off the air in the 1980s due to concerns about animated violence. However, the series has since been re-aired several times.

In 1986, the series was aired in RPN, then on ABS-CBN from 1987–1988 and IBC from 1989-1990. GMA revived the program, first in English dub, then in Filipino dub between Tagalog and Cebuano, in 1999. They have aired the program sporadically since, alongside Daimos.

In 2005, newly-launched cable channel Hero, owned by the ABS-CBN Corporation, released Voltes V as Voltes V Evolution. However, the voice cast was different from the GMA version. In an attempt to promote the show to a younger audience, the network had Jett Pangan, Sandara Park, Dennis Trillo and other Filipino celebrities re-dub the characters' voices. This decision alienated older, loyal fans[who?] who claimed the new voice actors lack effort in portraying their characters, or altogether miscast: however, the redub did somehow manage to pull though its whole run and had gone though at least one rerun in the said channel.

United States
An American English dubbed version was released in North America in 1983 by 3B Productions as Voltus 5. It was a condensed version of the first three episodes of the series. The English dub used the character names of the Philippine English version and had the theme song replaced with a generic instrumental.

Media appearances

In the Philippines, Voltes V was followed by a comic single, Camp Big V, in which Big Falcon was converted into a school for both humans and Boazanians.
All three Robot Romance Trilogy Mecha appear in the following Super Robot Wars games: Super Robot Wars Advance, Super Robot Wars Alpha 2, and Super Robot Wars Alpha 3. Alpha 3also allows all three robots to take part in a combination attack which did not feature in any of the shows. Voltes V also appears in many other games in the series, with and without the other two Romantics.
Voltes V was parodied in the anime series Burn Up Excess.
